postcards

My illustration professor from UDel, Dave Brinley, gave everyone in his senior class a hand full of blank, pre-stamped and addressed postcards when we graduated. The first one I sent to him after I got back from a road trip. I swear I saw a sea lion swimming in the ocean in Florida.

The second was inspired by a trip I took this month to Washington state. (sketch in the last post).

Fall sketches

Farmer McCutcheon

Olympic National Park. Exploring patterns, geometric shapes. While I was in Seattle I saw some beautiful aboriginal Australian and American Indian work at the art museum. I was inspired by their consistant visual language translating nature.

impressions

the second to last page of my sketchbook has been ripped out. someone must have borrowed a sheet. funny thing is, i can see the impression of what they wrote on the last page:

i am so in love with you ....(too faint to make out)...you....but....too shy..............love, your secret admirer

Butteryfly emerges from the Science Center

What more can I say?

Hey nice glowing embryo.

They were really asking for it, having the museum-goers to respond to the question: What are you afraid of. And Abby thought Brittany and I were opening a can of worms with the Wish Fulfillment Machine. Yes...I had to steal a few.

It's true. This is how they interpret cell division. I was surprised overall by how many abstract and beautiful ways they expressed science.

These the Heavens of (Abby's) Brain

Emily and Tom's shadows goofing around without them during the Dumbo Art Under the Bridge Festival

Last weekend, Emily and Brittany and I assisted Abby with her piece, These the Heavens of my Brain. Headlamps, glowing letters, suitcases, and a fishing pole. Photos and video to come.

Some landscapes in Manhattan.

Irrigating

For the last few days I've been making a site-specific installation for the Abandon Ship Exhibition which opened at the Current Gallery in Baltimore last night. I was pretty excited to be part of it.

I got a studio space at current a couple weeks ago so I would get out of my house and feel inspired to make work. I wanted to find out what was going on in Baltimore and be a part of it. But...the space is being torn down in August so it was kind of funny that I was trying to establish myself there. That's more or less what the piece is about.

Year End Show - YES!

Graduation, Year End Show. I helped Katie Smith out with some lettering/illustrations for the entrance to the show. Apparently there is a big scientific debate going on discussing a potentially new type of cloud. It looks like waves. Or someone holding up a sheet at either end of the sky and shaking it back and forth. I think Katie's guys are solidly cumulous.

> Two weeks until graduation. Everything is winding down/up...sort of. More just winding today.

Art directors, balloons, and typography

On Monday Marc, Mali, Sara and I went up to the Art Director's Club in New York. It was...different than I expected. I loved getting to talk to all the students and some of the reviewers. A lot of the time though I just felt like I was part of a giant flea market. I'm looking forward to the AIGA review tonight in Philly. I think it'll be a lot more personal.

I brought a balloon for the wishfulfillmentmachine.com along with me. After the review I tied it to a bike rack outside.

After ADC I was kind of bummed out so it was really nice when Marc found that someone had posted my City From Below poster on the blog welovetypography.com

AD's?

Lettering from Objects from the House Ind. class. These AD's are for organic fertilizer. I'm trying to decide if (with some more finessing) they could fit in with the rest of my portfolio. I've been updating my website this evening and looking at everything together I think it might be nice to show something more photographic with my mostly illustrative design work.

Michael Hersrud Workshop

Michael Hersrud gave a workshop this morning as part of the digital hype lecture series this week at UD. We had a couple hours to experiment with textures. It was refreshing to work quickly and sort of different for me, making shapes in Illustrator.

type and lettering

So I emailed a logo I made for feedback to my teacher, Ken Barber, and he liked it so much he put it up on his blog. He and Ben from House Industries teach the class. I hope they're equally into my project that's due tomorrow...

In other news, I feel like Brittany and I gave birth in the form of the wishfulfillmentmachine.com We had the baby and now we have to feed it and clothe it and get up in the middle of the night to rock it to sleep pay for it to go college and get married and babysit it's kids. Basically it's taking over our lives and we need to figure out a way to balance fulfilling wishes with all the other things we still need to do before graduation.

I forgot these

Just a couple logotype experiments for Unesco world heritage sites. Tubbataha's a coral reef in the Philippines. Banidagara's a cliff city in Mali.

I was looking through some old photos and I came across a video my dad took of me after a play in high school. He meant to take a picture so I'm just standing still, holding a smile and saying cheese while everyone around is moving about. It's really funny looking. I might do a series of little movies in that vein.

I was also thinking about a little font satire project using objects to create new versions of cheesy typefaces:
Party: in confetti, streamers, cake, etc etc.
Curls: locks of curly hair
Impact: indented or pressed/punched into clay
Comic Sans: non-serifed happy faces.

Hey Mom, this doesn't make any sense anymore -or- "New Work"

Lettering and accouterments using french fries, pickle remnant, strawberry, tomato, onion, ketchup, and sandwich spears. House Industries' hand lettering class rubbing off on me much?

We had a pretty good pre-crit on our posters last night. Mali was right, that wall looks nice. Everything's really fitting together this semester - lettering, illustration, screen printing, and portfolio prep. Can I be a designer-illustrator? Rachel Zimmerman from InLiquid, the Philly artists' site gave us a talk yesterday and she was talking about how important it is for us to have a cohesive body of work; a unit.
