Too good

So we're setting up the manger scene and my little sister says, "Ha! Ha! I got the baby Jesus - in your face!" Nice.

Feedback

I'm working with video feedback right now and I'm also thinking about language (as usual). About how thoughts are stuck in the feedback loop of your body until you say or make or do something with them. I'd like to make a connection between the two. The imagery in the videos is sort of dreamy; it reminds me of light seen through eyelids.

Here's an unedited clip of what I'm working with:

Also, I got an internship today! This winter I'll be working with Oliver Munday in DC and in Baltimore at Piece Studio

Touch-tacular!

Hooray! Britt and I's touch/sensation installation went up yesterday.

It had been a long time in the making - since this summer when my 12-year old co-worker at the fruit stand decided it would be funny to put a grocery bag full of water on my head and we realized it felt great. I thought, hey - why don't I make a silly spa of good sensations. Once Brittany and I began, it morphed into an installation of plastic fish bags, bubble wrap undulations, inky water, corn starch and water (which makes a substance that is both a solid and liquid! really, try it for yourself), salt crystals, a feather shower, and best of all, the tub.

Britt had heaps of polystyrene beads left over from another project and we decided, if it felt nice to dip your hand into them, it would feel fantastic to dip your whole body in. We were right. Everyone loved it.

More pictures/ video footage to come! (Probably on my web site).

.com

I put up my website tonight: juliannehamilton.com! It's still in progress, but at least my PDF is up. Hopefully in a couple of weeks I'll have an updated version.

Translations = Media yangga

I've been thinking about meaning and language - is language powerful or weak. Powerful but limited?

I'm playing around with free online translators. I went from English to each of the languages offered (in alphabetical order) and then back to English in between each translation to trace what happened. Starting with the phrase:

"of course everything I say is clear as day," and ending with "Media yangga"

of course everything that I say is being clear as noonday
everything is natural that I say, as a midday clearly
everything is natural what I say, like one I halve it clearly
All is natural, that I speak, as one I divide into two it clearly
Everything is natural, that I spoke, since I split into two it clearly
Everything is natural, that I spoke, since I tore in two it apparently
Everything is natural that I spoke, since I tore it in two apparently
Everything is natural what I was speaking, since I tore it in two apparently
All is natural, that I spoke, as I have torn it in two apparently
Everything is natural, that I was speaking, when I have torn it in two evidently
Everything is natural that I spoke when I tore it in two obviously
It is natural that everything is speaking when I tore it clear in two
Naturally, that whatever is said when torn into two clear
Of course, that everything that is called when torn into two clear
Of course, all of this, known as the torn, divided into two clear
Of course, all of which, known as the torn, divided into two separate
Of course, all of them, known as ambivalent, divided into two separate
Everyone is known as ambivalent, divided into two separate
Everyone is ambivalent, divided into two
ALL ambivalent, halved
ALL, half are ambivalent
ALL, is half the ambivalent
ALL, the medium is ambivalent
Ambivalent about the attitude of all the media is
The attitude of the media is all about yangga
The media is all about yangga
Media is about yangga
Media is yangga
Media yangga

Handstands in Space!

Messing around for the first time in After Effects.

In Autumn, trees drop their leaves

MANIFESTO

I am for an art of space, time, touch, taste, see, smell, hear. 3-D, 4-D, 9-D art-work/ art play. Because-I-wanted-it-to-exist art. Tall-white socks art. Tattooed-eyebrows art. Pencil art. Chalk art. Bubble art. Wax art. Glitter art. Kid art.

Art that feels like primal drums on the shaking, breathing floor beams of the second story.

I'm for an art that chases tag-your-it and sings with swarming locusts and dances without bones like an orbiting windmill. I'm for an art that is picked up from a bench like a piece of cold, forgotten pizza and immediately devoured. I'm for an art that smells like armpits that smell like humans.

Deep sun-salutation, child-pose, downward-dog breathing art. Alto art. Wood-grain art. Local art. Cheap art. Free art. Huge art. Smart art. Dumb art. Achey breaky heart art.

Wind art.

Wind art.

Wind art.

A little boy told me that crabbing would be more fun if it were war and the crabs had guns - I'm for that art.

I am for an art that crumbles into a flakey, papery wad in the pockets of laundered jeans or blankets like the last spinning-seconds before sleep. I am for an art that tickles until you can't breath, like an over-zealous father. I am for an art that wrestles or flirts or analyzes handwriting in carnival booths. I am for an art that lies in your lap like a warm hand.

Art that grows like an avocado stuck through with toothpicks in a water glass on the kitchen counter. Art that knows itself like the year you decide you're not a child. Sense-making art. Native symbols art. Combinations art. Letter art. Word art. Sentence art. Story art.

Hard-to-eat art. Honeysuckle art. Walnut art. Seeded concord grape art. Hard-shell blue crab art with sticky yellow guts and feathery lungs and sweet white meat...art.

I am for an art that is walked on like a welcome mat or scraped into snow like an ice rink. I am for an art that calls in the middle of the night.

I am for an art that talks or mumbles or yawns or laughs like an unfurled ribbon of magnesium.
